England stretch lead over Australia but lose Joe Root by lunch on day three at The Oval
Their lead stretched to 157 for the loss of 2 wickets together with all the dismissal of Joe Root to Nathan Lyon dampening somewhat an otherwise strong opening session, by lunch on day three of the fifth Ashes Test.??
SCORECARD | COMMENTARY
Much like England sizzled on using the bat, Joe Denly in playing very positively through to 37 not out.
Denly struck five boundaries and a half in the session, the first of that came off Pat Cummins’ third chunk of the day – a neat, straight drive past mid-range – while he plundered 10 off two balls from Lyon’s opening above, launching a straight six into the stands.
It was part of a transparent, aggressive gameplan from England against the offspinner, perhaps not needing Lyon to settle to a spell to a pitch that’s starting to split but, although 20 runs came out of his first three overs, Rory Burns departed for 20 at the final of these when seeking to play attacking shot too many.
Burns went after a short, wide one but succeeded only in bottom-edging his attempted cut through to the wicketkeeper, whilst Root (21) edged Lyon to slip second ball since he was brought back in the attack just before the break.
